What your rabbit would tell you if you look closely
Back to the Wild Rabbit
In the wild, rabbits live in colonies, with an underground burrow system where they can shelter, rest, and raise their young. They are active at dusk and in the early morning, when it's cool. During the day, you can see them sunbathing, digging, or grazing at the edge of a field.
What does this mean for rabbits living with humans? That they need much more than just a 1 by 1 hutch. They want to:
- Run, jump, hop
- Dig in, for example, a deep tray with soil or sand
- Houses, shelters, and elevated lookout spots
- Rabbits are social animals and should not be kept alone
- Fixed times for food, rest, and interaction
Fresh Greens from Your Own Garden
A rabbit is a true herbivore. Grass, herbs, flowers, and leaves make up the majority of their natural diet. That's why we developed the Rodent Garden: a seed mix to sow yourself in the garden, a balcony planter, or even on the windowsill.
This mix contains a nice variety of grasses, herbs, and flowers. This way, you give your rabbit daily access to fresh, home-grown greens full of flavor, texture, and nutrients.
Natural Gnawing: More Than Just Filling
Besides greens, rabbits also want to gnaw on something firmer. So always provide good quality hay. You can read more about hay here.
Additionally, offer them a wide choice with our rich rodent mix: a selection of whole grains, seeds, and roughage pellets. No anonymous kibble or processed pellets, but nutritious ingredients that will make your pet's teeth and intestines happy!
And yes, we know that rabbits are not officially rodents; they belong to the lagomorphs. But their gnawing need is just as great. Their teeth grow throughout their lives. Good gnawing opportunities are therefore not a luxury, but a necessity.
Healthy extras for a strong body
Treating doesn't have to be unhealthy. With our hemp bites, you give a natural snack full of good fatty acids, fiber, and protein. Easily digestible and without additives. Perfect as a change or reward.
Also interesting: peat drink. In nature, animals absorb all kinds of humic substances and minerals through earth, water, and plants. Peat drink brings that principle to your water bowl. Dissolve a small amount in some extra water, next to the normal drinking bottle, for gentle support of the intestinal mucous membranes.
Hutch care
A healthy living environment is just as important as good food. A natural rabbit burrow is teeming with microorganisms that help break down waste products. In a hutch, you can mimic this with Multi Task, a mix of effective microorganisms that you spray over the bedding. This ensures a balance in odor and hygiene.
What you can do; a checklist for natural rabbit keeping
Do you want to keep your rabbit as it naturally lives? Then consider the following:
- Space & exercise: A minimum of 6 m² living space per rabbit, with opportunities to run, dig, and jump.
- Social contact: Rabbits live in pairs or groups. Alone is not an option.
- Green fodder & gnawing material: Sow a Rodent Garden for daily fresh green fodder. In addition, feed unlimited hay and a handful of organic rodent mix daily.
- Healthy extras: Treat with hemp bites and occasionally add peat drink to water.
- A healthy hutch: Spray the bedding regularly with Multi Task for a fresh and healthy living environment.
A rabbit that lives as it does in nature is active, social, has freedom of choice and nutrition that provides freedom of choice. That makes for a happy and healthy animal.
